The
Judicial Studies Center, DuBois, Wyoming
"How did you feel the day you first assumed the bench?"
That is one of the early questions asked of the participants at the Judicial
Studies Center at the Thunderhead Ranch near DuBois, Wyoming. As you read
this, how would you answer that question?
What would you say to these inquiries:
How long has it been since you've felt as you did then?
Would you like to regain the enthusiasm you had at that time?
What in your opinion has changed between then and now?
For five days each Fall an eclectic assembly of Judges from every type of court and every state in the Union share their views on these issues and others not typically explored in the rigid construct of most judicial seminars.
There are no writing assignments and no reading, unless somebody brings
something along they want to share as a matter of general interest. What
is encouraged in the words of the late Justice Felix Frankfurter is, "Ample
time and freshness of mood for private study and reflection...and fruitful
interchange."
The center is located at Thunderhead Ranch, which offers a several-thousand-acre
microcosm of the scenic beauty of the American West. The center is a non-profit
institution. Your tuition will does not equal the cost of the session
but the rewards of the judges who have found a better way to deliver justice
is the ultimate profit for all of us.
The ranch is nestled into a valley between the great Wind River Range
and the Absoraka Mountains and, yes, a good trout stream does run through
it. Accommodations are rustic and the food is simple and good. Over the
years, many of our Judges have allowed themselves an extra day or two
before or after the program to explore nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton
National Parks. Shoppers find lots of opportunity awaiting in Jackson,
Wyoming. The staff at the center is composed of lawyers, judges, a psychologist
or two, and guests invited for their unique perspectives on issues of
interest to those in the legal profession. The goal in every session is
the creation of a relaxed but dynamic atmosphere where our nation's frontline
decision-makers can reconnect with who they are as individuals and how
they can most effectively meet the demands of the office they occupy.
The program works. Former participants have given us many testimonials
like these:
"Without hesitation, I can tell you that the seminar at Thunderhead
was truly one of the most meaningful events I have ever been a part of.
Not only will I remember it forever, I am confident that I will benefit
from what I learned for the rest of my life." Hon. Charles E. Atwell,
Presiding Circuit Judge, Grants Pass, Oregon.
"It was without a doubt the most moving and worthwhile seminar that
I have ever attended." Hon. Jeffrey K. Sprecher, Court of Common
Pleas, Reading, Pennsylvania.
How about you, Judge? Are you ready to make an investment in yourself?
If so, we'll look forward to seeing you in Wyoming.
Very truly yours,
ALTON T. DAVIS,
Chief Judge 46th Judicial Circuit, Michigan
The next session of the Judicial Studies Center is September 9th through
15th.
